8.2.1 Holomorphic maps
Let , and being complex manifolds with and . Take a point in a chart of . Let be a chart of such that . If we write and , we have a map . If each function is a holomorphic
function of , is called a holomorphic map. This definition is independent of the special coordinates chosen. In fact, let be another chart such that and be the coordinates. Take a point . If is a holomorphic function with respect to , then
We also find . Thus, is holomorphic with respect to too. It can be shown that the holomorphic property is also independent of the choice of chart in .
Let and be complex manifolds. We say is biholomorphic to if there exists a diffeomorphism which is also holomorphic (then is automatically holomorphic). The map is called a biholomorphism.
A holomorphic function is a holomorphic map . There is a striking theorem; any holomorphic function on a compact complex manifold is constant. This is a generalization of the maximum principle of elementary complex analysis, see Wells (1980). The set of holomorphic functions on is denoted by . Similarly, is the set of holomorphic functions on .
8.2.2 Complexifications
Let be a differentiable manifold with . If is decomposed as where , then is a complex-valued smooth function. The set of complex-valued smooth functions on is called the complexification of , denoted by . A complexified function does not satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann relation in general. For , the complex conjugate of is . is real if and only if .
Before we consider the complexification of , we define the complexification of a general vector space with . An element of takes the form where . The vector space becomes a complex vector space of complex dimension if the addition and the scalar multiplication by a complex number are defined by
is a vector subspace of since and may be identified. Vectors in are said to be real. The complex conjugate of is . A vector is real if .
A linear operator on is extended to act on as
If is a linear function , its extension is a complex-valued linear function on , . In general, any tensor defined on and is extended so that it is defined on and . An extended tensor is complexified as , where and are tensors of the same type. The conjugate of is . If , the tensor is said to be real. For example is real if .
Let be a basis of . If the basis vectors are regarded as complex vectors, the same basis becomes a basis of . To see this, let , . Then is uniquely expressed as . We find .
Now we are ready to complexify the tangent space . If is replaced by , we have the complexification of , whose element is expressed as ( ). The vector acts on a function as
The dual vector space is complexified if are combined as . The set of complexified dual vectors is denoted by . Any tensor is extended so that it is defined on and and then complexified.
Show that . From now on, we denote the complexified dual vector space simply by .
Given smooth vector fields , we define a complex vector field . Clearly . The set of complex vector fields is the complexification of and is denoted by . The conjugate vector field of is . if , hence . The Lie bracket of , is
The complexification of a tensor field of type is defined in an obvious manner. If is a complexified one-form.
8.2.3 Almost complex structure
Since a complex manifold is also a differentiable manifold, we may use the framework developed in chapter 5. We then put appropriate constraints on the results. Let us look at the tangent space of a complex manifold with . The tangent space is spanned by vectors
where are the coordinates of in a chart . With the same coordinates, is spanned by
Let us define vectors
where . Clearly they form a basis of the -dimensional (complex) vector space . Note that . Correspondingly, one-forms
form the basis of . They are dual to (8.13),
Let be a complex manifold and define a linear map by
is a real tensor of type (1, 1). Note that
Roughly speaking, corresponds to the multiplication by . The action of is independent of the chart. In fact, let and be overlapping charts with and . On , the functions satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann relations. Then we find
We also find that . Accordingly, takes the form
with respect to the basis (8.11), where is the unit matrix. Since all the components of are constant at any point, we may define a smooth tensor field whose components at are (8.18). The tensor field is called the almost
complex structure of a complex manifold . Note that any -dimensional manifold locally admits a tensor field which squares to . However, may be patched across charts and defined globally only on a complex manifold. The tensor completely specifies the complex structure.
The almost complex structure is extended so that it may be defined on ,
It follows from (8.16) that
Thus, we have an expression for in (anti-)holomorphic bases,
whose components are given by
Let be a vector of the form . Then is an eigenvector of ; . Similarly, satisfies . In this way of a complex manifold is separated into two disjoint vector spaces,
where
We define the projection operators by
In fact, for any . Hence,
Now is uniquely decomposed as ( ). is spanned by and by . is called a holomorphic vector while is called an anti-holomorphic vector. We readily verify that
Note that
Let and be overlapping charts on a complex manifold and let and . Verify that , expressed in the coordinates , contains a holomorphic basis only. Thus, the separation of into is independent of charts (note that is defined independently of charts).
Given a complexified vector field , we obtain a new vector field defined at each point of by . The vector field is naturally separated as
where . The vector field is called a holomorphic (antiholomorphic) vector field. Accordingly, once is given, is decomposed uniquely as
is real if and only if
Let . Show that . [If , then
