The last example of the characteristic classes is the Stiefel-Whitney class. In contrast to the rest of the characteristic classes, the Stiefel-Whitney class cannot be expressed in terms of the curvature of the bundle. The Stiefel-Whitney class is important in physics since it tells us whether a manifold admits a spin or not. Let us start with a brief review of a spin bundle.
11.6.1 Spin bundles
Let be a tangent bundle with . The bundle is assumed to have a fibre metric and the structure group is taken to be . If, furthermore, is orientable, can be reduced down to . Let be the frame bundle associated with . Let be the transition function of which satisfies the consistency condition (9.6)
A spin structure on is defined by the transition function such that
where is the double covering . The set of defines a spin bundle over and is said to admit a spin structure (of course, may admit many spin structures depending on the choice of ).
It is interesting to note that not all manifolds admit spin structures. Non-admittance of spin structures is measured by the second Stiefel-Whitney class which takes values in the Čech cohomology group .
11.6.2 Čech cohomology groups
Let be the multiplicative group . A Čech -cochain is a function , defined on , which is totally symmetric under an arbitrary permutation ,
Let be the multiplicative group of Čech -cochains. We define the coboundary operator by
where the variable below the is omitted. For example,
Since we employ the multiplicative notation, the unit element of is denoted by 1. We verify that is nilpotent:
since always appears an even number of times in the middle expression (for example if , we have from the symmetry of ). Thus, we have proved, for any Čech -cochain , that
The cocycle group and the coboundary group are defined by
Now the th Čech cohomology group is defined by
11.6.3 Stiefel-Whitney classes
The Stiefel-Whitney class is a characteristic class which takes its values in . Let be a tangent bundle with a Riemannian metric. The structure group is , . We assume is a simple open covering of , which means that the intersection of any number of charts is either empty or contractible. Let ( ) be a local orthonormal frame of over . We have where is the transition function. Define the Čech 1-cochain by
This is, indeed, an element of since . From the cocycle condition , we verify that
Hence, and it defines an element of . Now we show that this element is independent of the local frame chosen. Let be another frame over such that , . From , we find . If we define the 0-cochain by , we find that
where use has been made of the identity for . Thus, changes by an exact amount and still defines the same cohomology class .1
This special element is called the first Stiefel-Whitney class.
Let be a tangent bundle with fibre metric. is orientable if and only if is trivial.
Proof
If is orientable, the structure group may be reduced to and , and hence , the unit element of . Conversely, if is trivial, is a coboundary; . Since , we can always choose such that for each . If we define the new frame , we have transition functions such that for any overlapping pair and is orientable. [Suppose for some pair . Then we may take and , hence .]
Theorem 11.6 shows that the first Stiefel-Whitney class is an obstruction to the orientability. Next we define the second Stiefel-Whitney class. Suppose is an -dimensional orientable manifold and is its tangent bundle. For the transition function , we consider a ‘lifting’, such that
where is the homomorphism (note that we have an option or ). This lifting always exists locally. Since
we have . For to define a spin bundle over , they must satisfy the cocycle condition,
Define the Čech 2-cochain by
It is easy to see that is symmetric and closed. Thus, defines an element called the second Stiefel-Whitney class. It can be shown that is independent of the local frame chosen.
Suppose we take another lift of . Show that changes by an exact amount under this change. Accordingly, is independent of the lift. [Hint: Show that where denotes the sign of .]
Let be the tangent bundle over an orientable manifold . There exists a spin bundle over if and only if is trivial.
Proof
Suppose there exists a spin bundle over . Then we define a set of transition functions such that over any overlapping charts and , hence is trivial. Conversely, suppose is trivial, namely
being a 1-cochain. We consider the 1-cochain defined in exercise 11.5. If we choose new transition functions , we have
and, hence, defines a spin bundle over .
We outline some useful results:

being the generator of
