12.7 The heat kernel and generalized -functions
As we mentioned in section 12.2, there are several methods of proving the AS index theorem. The heat kernel is relatively accessible to physicists and it also has many applications to other problems in physics. The generalized -function is related to the heat kernel and also has relevance in physics.
12.7.1 The heat kernel and index theorem
Let be a complex vector bundle over an -dimensional compact manifold . Let be an elliptic operator with eigenvectors such that
We denote the set of eigenvalues of by . We assume that is non-negative, i.e. all the eigenvalues are non-negative. Suppose there are modes , with vanishing eigenvalue. In other words,
These modes are called the zero modes. Define the heat kernel by
It is convenient to represent in the coordinate basis as
Multiple eigenstates should be counted as many times as they appear. We assume is orthonormal: . The convergence of (12.93) for is guaranteed since is non-negative. Taking the limit , we have
where the summation is over the zero modes only. Thus, tends to be the projection operator onto the space of zero modes as
Define
Then it follows from (12.95) that
It is easy to verify that satisfies the heat equation,
If is the conventional Laplacian, (12.99) reduces to the ordinary heat equation. The initial condition is
where the last equality follows from the completeness of the eigenvectors.
It is known that the solution of (12.99) has an asymptotic expansion for given by
see Gilkey (1984). Similarly, has an expansion
where
Let and be complex vector bundles over and be an elliptic operator. We define two Laplacians
It is important to note that they have the same non-vanishing eigenvalues including the degeneracy. To see this, let . Then there is a vector such that
Note that since . Conversely, if satisfies , then is an eigenvector of with the same eigenvalue . Thus, we have found the symmetry3
where the prime denotes that the zero eigenmodes are omitted.
Define two heat kernels and by
We have
What is more interesting is the index of . Since and , we have
The final equality follows since the -dependent part of cancels out by the symmetry (12.105). We expand and as
This is a kind of ‘supersymmetry’, see section 12.10.
Picking up -independent terms, we have
where are defined in (12.102).
In general, are local invariants written in terms of curvature two-forms. In section 13.2, we use the heat kernel to prove the index theorem
for the twisted spin complex over a manifold with .
Let and be as before. Show that
is independent of . Show also that .
12.7.2 Spectral -functions
Let and be vector bundles over . Define a new function
where and the prime denotes the omission of the zero modes . A function may similarly be defined for . The functions and are related by the Mellin transformation. To see this, we recall the definition of the -function,
where is taken to be strictly positive. From this we find
We also note that
is the spectral -function defined in (1.158).
Verify that
where the general power of an operator may be defined in the sense of an eigenvalue, namely we put . Re is assumed to be sufficiently large so that (12.114) is well defined. [Hint: Use the completeness of the eigenvectors.]
The following example is taken from Kulkarni (1975). Let and a trivial line bundle over (a cylinder). Take an operator . From the eigenvalue equation,
we find that
The heat kernel is
while
We easily verify that satisfies
We then find from these inequalities that
or by putting the value
we find
This shows that
In general, the asymptotic series starts with .
