若点 $a\in X$ 是 $X$ 的形变收缩核，则称 $X$ 是可缩(contractible)的。

设 $c_a:X\to \{a\}$ 为常值映射。若 $X$ 是可缩的，则存在同伦 $H:X\times I\to X$，使得对任意 $x\in X$ 都有 $H(x,0)=c_a(x)=a$ 与 $H(x,1)={\mathrm{id}}_X(x)=x$，并且对任意 $t\in I$ 都有 $H(a,t)=a$。这个同伦 $H$ 称为收缩。

If a point $a\in X$ is a deformation retract of $X$ , $X$ is said to be contractible.

Let $c_a:X\to \{a\}$ be a constant map. If $X$ is contractible, there exists a homotopy $H:X\times I\to X$ such that $H(x,0)=c_a(x)=a$ and $H(x,1)={\mathrm{id}}_X(x)=x$ for any $x\in X$ and, moreover, $H(a,t)=a$ for any $t\in I$ . The homotopy $H$ is called the contraction.
