常值路径

设 $X$ 为拓扑空间，$I=[0,1]$。若连续映射 $\alpha :I\to X$ 满足 $\alpha (0)=x_0$ 且 $\alpha (1)=x_1$，则称其为以 $x_0$ 为起点、以 $x_1$ 为终点的路径(path)。若 $\alpha (0)=\alpha (1)=x_0$，则称该路径为以 $x_0$ 为基点的环路(loop)（或称 $x_0$ 处的环路）。

对 $x\in X$，常值路径(constant path) $c_x:I\to X$ 由 $c_x(s)=x,s\in I$ 定义。由于 $c_x(0)=c_x(1)=x$，常值路径也是常值环路。拓扑空间 $X$ 中的路径或环路之集可以赋予如下代数结构。

Let $X$ be a topological space and let $I=[0,1]$ . A continuous map $\alpha :I\to X$ is called a path with an initial point $x_0$ and an end point $x_1$ if $\alpha (0)=x_0$ and $\alpha (1)=x_1$ . If $\alpha (0)=\alpha (1)=x_0$ , the path is called a loop with base point $x_0$ (or a loop at $x_0$ ).

For $x\in X$ , a constant path $c_x:I\to X$ is defined by $c_x(s)=x,s\in I$ . A constant path is also a constant loop since $c_x(0)=c_x(1)=x$ . The set of paths or loops in a topological space $X$ may be endowed with an algebraic structure as follows.
