设 $X$ 与 $Y$ 为拓扑空间。若存在连续映射 $f:X\to Y$ 与 $g:Y\to X$，使得 $f\circ g\sim {\mathrm{id}}_Y$ 且 $g\circ f\sim {\mathrm{id}}_X$，则称 $X$ 与 $Y$ 同伦等价（同伦型(homotopy type)相同），记作 $X\simeq Y$。映射 $f$ 称为同伦等价(homotopy equivalence)，$g$ 称为它的同伦逆(homotopy inverse)。[注：若 $X$ 与 $Y$ 同胚，则 $X$ 与 $Y$ 具有相同的同伦型，但反之未必成立。例如，一点 $\{p\}$ 与实直线 $\mathbb{R}$ 具有相同的同伦型，但 $\{p\}$ 与 $\mathbb{R}$ 并不同胚。]

Let $X$ and $Y$ be topological spaces. $X$ and $Y$ are of the same homotopy type, written as $X\simeq Y$ , if there exist continuous maps $f:X\to Y$ and $g:Y\to X$ such that $f\circ g\sim {\mathrm{id}}_Y$ and $g\circ f\sim {\mathrm{id}}_X$ . The map $f$ is called the homotopy equivalence and $g$ , its homotopy inverse. [Remark: If $X$ is homeomorphic to $Y$ , $X$ and $Y$ are of the same homotopy type but the converse is not necessarily true. For example, a point $\{p\}$ and the real line $\mathbb{R}$ are of the same homotopy type but $\{p\}$ is not homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}$ .]
