7.1.1 Metric tensors
In elementary geometry, the inner product between two vectors and is defined by where and are the components of the vectors in . On a manifold, an inner product is defined at each tangent space .
Let be a differentiable manifold. A Riemannian metric on is a type (0, 2) tensor field on which satisfies the following axioms at each point :
(i)
(ii) , where the equality holds only whenHere and . In short, is a symmetric positive-definite bilinear form.
A tensor field of type (0, 2) is a pseudo-Riemannian metric if it satisfies (i) and
(ii’) if for any , then .
In chapter 5, we have defined the inner product between a vector and a dual vector as a map . If there exists a metric , we define an inner product between two vectors by . Since is a map we may define a linear map by . Then is identified with a one-form . Similarly, induces by . Thus, the metric gives rise to an isomorphism between and .
Let be a chart in and the coordinates. Since , it is expanded in terms of as
It is easily checked that
We usually omit in unless it may cause confusion. It is common to regard as a matrix whose th entry is . Since has the maximal rank, it has an inverse denoted by according to the tradition: . The determinant is denoted by . Clearly . The isomorphism between and is now expressed as
From (7.1a) and (7.1b) we recover the ‘old-fashioned’ definition of the metric as an infinitesimal distance squared. Take an infinitesimal displacement and plug it into to find
We also call the quantity a metric, although in a strict sense the metric is a tensor
Since is a symmetric matrix, the eigenvalues are real. If is Riemannian, all the eigenvalues are strictly positive and if is pseudo-Riemannian, some of them may be negative. If there are positive and negative eigenvalues, the pair is called the index of the metric. If , the metric is called a Lorentz metric. Once a metric is diagonalized by an appropriate orthogonal matrix, it is easy to reduce all the diagonal elements to by a suitable scaling of the basis vectors with positive numbers. If we start with a Riemannian metric we end up with the Euclidean metric and if we start with a Lorentz metric, the Minkowski metric .
If is Lorentzian, the elements of are divided into three classes as follows,
(i) is spacelike,
(ii) is lightlike (or null), (7.4)
(iii) is timelike.
Diagonalize the metric
to show that it reduces to the Minkowski metric. The frame on which the metric takes this form is known as the light cone frame. Let be the basis of the Minkowski frame in which the metric is . Show that are the basis vectors in the light cone frame, where . Let be components of a vector . Find the components of the corresponding one-form.
If a smooth manifold admits a Riemannian metric , the pair is called a Riemannian manifold. If is a pseudo-Riemannian metric, is called a pseudo-Riemannian manifold. If is Lorentzian, is called a Lorentz manifold. Lorentz manifolds are of special interest in the theory of relativity. For example, an -dimensional Euclidean space is a Riemannian manifold and an -dimensional Minkowski space is a Lorentz manifold.
7.1.2 Induced metric
Let be an -dimensional submanifold of an -dimensional Riemannian manifold with the metric . If is the embedding which induces the submanifold structure of (see section 5.2), the pullback map induces the natural metric on . The components of are given by
where denote the coordinates of . For example, consider the metric of the unit sphere embedded in . Let be the polar coordinates of and define by the usual inclusion
from which we obtain the induced metric
Let be an embedding of the torus into defined by
where . Show that the induced metric on is
When a manifold is pseudo-Riemannian, its submanifold need not have a metric . The tensor is a metric only when it has a fixed index on .
