只要重叠的坐标卡满足(2.36)，不可定向流形(non-orientable manifold)就无法被这样的坐标卡覆盖。例子包括莫比乌斯带以及 n 为偶数时的实射影空间${\mathbf{RP}}^n$。（相比之下，n 为奇数时${\mathbf{RP}}^n$是可定向的，而对所有$n.)$，${\mathbf{CP}}^n$都是可定向的。在这些讲义中，我们只讨论可定向流形。

Non-orientable manifolds cannot be covered by overlapping charts such that (2.36) holds. Examples include the M¨obius strip and real projective space ${\mathbf{RP}}^n$ for n even. (In contrast ${\mathbf{RP}}^n$ is orientable for n odd, and ${\mathbf{CP}}^n$ is orientable for all $n.)$ In these lectures, we deal only with orientable manifolds.
