4.6.1 Abelian nature of higher homotopy groups

Higher homotopy groups are always Abelian; for any -loops and at , and satisfy

To verify this assertion let us observe figure 4.18. Clearly the deformation is homotopic at each step of the sequence. This shows that , namely .

Figure 4.18. Higher homotopy groups are always commutative, .

4.6.2 Arcwise connectedness and higher homotopy groups

If a topological space is arcwise connected, is isomorphic to for any pair . The proof is parallel to that of theorem 4.2. Accordingly, if is arcwise connected, the base point need not be specified.

4.6.3 Homotopy invariance of higher homotopy groups

Let and be topological spaces of the same homotopy type; see definition 4.6. If is a homotopy equivalence, the homotopy group is isomorphic to ; cf theorem 4.3. Topological invariance of higher homotopy groups is the direct consequence of this fact. In particular, if is contractible, the homotopy groups are trivial: , .

4.6.4 Higher homotopy groups of a product space

Let and be arcwise connected topological spaces. Then

cf theorem 4.6.

4.6.5 Universal covering spaces and higher homotopy groups

There are several cases in which the homotopy groups of one space are given by the known homotopy groups of the other space. There is a remarkable property

between the higher homotopy groups of a topological space and its universal covering space.

Let and be connected topological spaces. The pair , or simply , is called the covering space of if there exists a continuous map such that

(1) is surjective (onto)
(2) for each , there exists a connected open set containing , such that is a disjoint union of open sets in , each of which is mapped homeomorphically onto by .

In particular, if is simply connected, is called the universal covering space of . [Remarks: Certain groups are known to be topological spaces. They are called topological groups. For example and are topological groups. If and in definition 4.12 happen to be topological groups and to be a group homomorphism, the (universal) covering space is called the (universal) covering group.]

For example, is the universal covering space of , see section 4.3. Since is identified with , is a universal covering group of if is regarded as an additive group. The map may be . Clearly is surjective and if , then

which is a disjoint union of open sets of . It is easy to show that is also a homomorphism with respect to addition in and multiplication in . Hence, is the universal covering group of .

Let be the universal covering space of a connected topological space . If and are base points such that , the induced homomorphism

is an isomorphism for . [Warning: This theorem cannot be applied if ; while .]

The proof is given in Croom (1978). For example, we have since is contractible. Then we find

Let . The real projective space is obtained from by identifying the pair of antipodal points . It is easy to

see that is a covering space of for . Since for , is the universal covering space of and we have

It is interesting to note that is identified with SO(3). To see this let us specify an element of SO(3) by a rotation about an axis by an angle and assign a ‘vector’ to this element. takes its value in the disc of radius . Moreover, and represent the same rotation and should be identified. Thus, the space to which belongs is a disc whose anti-podal points on the surface are identified. Note also that we may express as the northern hemisphere of , whose anti-podal points on the boundary are identified. This shows that is identified with SO(3).

It is also interesting to see that is identified with . First note that any element is written as

If we write and , this becomes ,

Collecting these results, we find

More generally, the universal covering group of is called the spin group. For small , they are
