12.5.1 The Hirzebruch signature
Let be a compact orientable manifold of even dimension, . Let and be the elements of the ‘middle’ cohomology group . We consider a bilinear form defined by
cf example 11.8. This definition is independent of the representatives of and . The form is symmetric if is even ( ) and anti-symmetric if is odd ( ). Poincaré duality shows that the bilinear form has the maximal rank and is, hence, non-degenerate. If is even, the symmetric form has real eigenvalues, of which are positive and of which are negative ( ). The Hirzebruch signature is defined by
If is odd, is defined to vanish (an anti-symmetric form has pure imaginary eigenvalues). In the following, we set .
The Hodge satisfies when acting on a -form in a -dimensional manifold and hence has eigenvalues . Let be the set of harmonic -forms on . We note that and each element of has a unique harmonic representative. is separated into disjoint subspaces,
according to the eigenvalue of . This separation block diagonalizes the bilinear form . In fact, for ,
where is the standard positive-definite inner product defined by (7.181). We also find
where we have noted that for any forms and . Hence, is block diagonal with respect to and, moreover, . Now is expressed as
Let . Show that
[Hint: Use the Poincaré duality to show that mod 2.]
12.5.2 The signature complex and the Hirzebruch signature theorem
Let be an -dimensional compact Riemannian manifold without a boundary and let be the given metric. Consider an operator
is a square root of the Laplacian: . To show that is elliptic, it suffices to verify that is elliptic since the symbol of a product of operators is the product of symbols. Let us compute the symbol of . As for , we have . As for , it can be shown that (Palais 1965, pp77-8)
Here is an interior product defined by (cf. (5.79))
where the one-form under is omitted and we put . Now the symbol of the Laplacian is obtained from (12.58) as
where is an arbitrary -form and the norm is taken with respect to the given Riemannian metric. Finally, we obtain
Thus, the Laplacian is elliptic and so is .
Since the Laplacian is self-dual on , the index of vanishes trivially. It is also observed that on and, hence, . To construct a non-trivial index theorem, we have to find a complex on which .
Consider the restriction of to even forms, where and . The adjoint of is . Show that
[Hint: Prove and . This complex, although non-trivial, does not yield anything new.]
If , we have for . We define an operator by
Observe that is a ‘square root’ of . In fact, for ,
where we have noted that . We easily verify (exercise) that
Let act on . Since , the eigenvalues of are . Then we have a decomposition of into the eigenspaces of as
Since anti-commutes with , the restriction of to defines an elliptic complex called the signature complex,
where . The index of the signature complex is
where and . On the RHS of (12.65), all the contributions except those from the harmonic -forms cancel out. To see this, we separate and as
where . If , we have . Then a map defines an isomorphism between and . Now the index simplifies as
where we put as before (the index vanishes if is odd). It is important to note that since in , see (12.54). Now the index (12.66) reduces to the Hirzebruch signature,
The derivation of the topological index is rather technical and we simply quote the result from Shananan (1978). Let be the subspace of such that . Then we have
where the last equality is true only for the -forms in the expansion and . Now we have obtained the Hirzebruch signature theorem
where is the Hirzebruch -polynomial defined by (11.91). Since is even in , vanishes if . For example, for . If , we have
As in the case of the Dolbeault complex, we may twist the signature complex, see Eguchi et al (1980), for example.
