The final example of classical complexes is the spin complex. This complex is very important in physics since it describes Dirac fields interacting with gauge fields and/or gravitational fields.

12.6.1 Dirac operator

Let us consider a spin bundle over an -dimensional orientable manifold . We shall denote the set of sections of this bundle by . We assume that is an even integer. The spin group is generated by Dirac matrices , which satisfy

Throughout this chapter we assume that the metric has the Euclidean signature. The Clifford algebra is generated by

The last generator is of particular importance and we define

Our convention is such that and . It can be shown from the general theory of the Clifford algebra that the are represented by matrices with complex entries. It is convenient to take a representation of such that is diagonal,

where here is the unit matrix.

For , we take

being the Pauli matrices,

For , we may take

A Dirac spinor is an irreducible representation of the Clifford algebra but not that of . Irreducible representations of are obtained by separating according to the eigenvalues of . Since , the eigenvalues of , called the chirality, must be . Then is separated into two eigenspaces

where for . The projection operators onto are given by

Thus, we may write

The reader should verify that , , and .

The Dirac operator in a curved space is given by (section 7.10)

where is the spin connection and . Let us prove that is elliptic. Let be a function defined near such that and . Take a section such that . From (12.4), we have

which shows that

If we note that , we find that (12.77) is invertible for , hence is an elliptic operator.

It can be shown that is taken in the form

see example 12.4 for and 4. Then (12.76) becomes

where

Hence, is, indeed, the adjoint of (note that is anti-Hermitian). For

we have

while for

we have

Hence, and . Now we have a two-term complex

called the spin complex. The analytical index of this complex is

where is the number of zero-energy modes of chirality .

Let us apply the AS index theorem to this case. Without getting into the details of the Clifford algebra and the spin complex, we simply write down the result. The AS index theorem for the spin complex (12.81) is

where is the Dirac genus defined by (11.94). Since contains only -forms, vanishes unless mod 4. Of course, this does not necessarily imply . The proof of (12.83) will be given later in sections 12.9 and 12.10.

12.6.2 Twisted spin complexes

In physics, a spinor field may belong to a representation of a group . For example, the quark field in QCD belongs to the 3 of SU(3). A spinor which belongs to a representation of is a section of the product bundle , where is an associated vector bundle of in an appropriate representation. The Dirac operator in this case is

where is the gauge potential on . The AS index theorem for this twisted spin complex is

For , we have

while for

Let

Then we find

We also have . Accordingly, the index of these bundles is

Let us consider the monopole bundle . If is the local gauge potential, the field strength is . The index theorem is

where . As was shown in section 10.5, the RHS represents the winding number and analytical information (the LHS) is now expressed in a topological way (the RHS).

Let be the instanton bundle. Expression (12.88) reads as

The RHS represents the instanton number . Note that if while if . It can be shown that ( ) if ( ), see Jackiw and Rebbi (1977). For example, let be self-dual. Suppose . From (12.80), we find that

where . It is easily verified that is anti-self-dual and hence . Since is a positive-definite operator, it has no normalizable bound states. This verifies that .
