Given a action of phase space, the construction of corresponding metaplectic representation operators using quadratic expressions in annihilation and creation operators is of fundamental importance in quantum field theory, where is infinite. This topic is however usually not discussed in physics textbooks for the finite dimensional case. We will encounter the quantum field theory version in later chapters where it will be examined in detail.
