and $T_{\mu \nu }$ is the energy–stress tensor of all the matter fields present. The constant $\kappa$ is known as Einstein’s gravitational constant; we shall relate it to Newton’s gravitational constant directly. These equations have the property that for weak fields, $g_{\mu \nu }\approx {\eta }_{\mu \nu }$ , they reduce to the Poisson equation when appropriate identifications are made (see the discussion of the weak field approximation below), and by the contracted Bianchi identity Eq. (18.60) they guarantee a ‘covariant’ version of the conservation identities
